Gene Gray, owner of Gray Signs+Graphics, was first licensed in 1986 through 1992. He made a career change in 1989 and worked as a licensed psychotherapist and administrator in several non-profit organizations.

After starting Gray Signs+Graphics in 2005, he renewed his sign contractors license in order to provide his clients with a full-service sign company.

Gray Signs+Graphics assures his clients that their projects will not only comply with zoning and code requirements, but that they will get the quality in design, as well.

As a licensed psychotherapist, Gene spent the last 17 years in the social services field, working in foster care, child protective services, counseling, and other social services management positions. You could say that Gene has gone from "signs," to "minds," and back to signs.

In 1977, Gene established his first sign business, Signs & Designs, in Antelope Valley. Thanks to some friends who trusted him and gave him his first chance at painting signs, he got his start. He thanks Art and Marlene Satterfield (of Hair Co.) and Bill and June Hessler (of Suitcase Harry's) for his first sign jobs. Gene even painted one or two signs for Frank's Sign Service of Palmdale.

After going on his own, he started out painting signs in his kitchen, then Jerry and Sandy Anderson's garage, and eventually renting the former building occupied by Palmdale Glass Co. at 820 East Avenue Q-6, in Palmdale. In the beginning, he would coat out a piece of plywood, make cold calls or wait for the phone to ring so that he could paint a sign. His first "employee" was his adventurous wife, Cyndi, who helped paint plywood, soon taking over over the office work.

The business grew........

He managed Signs & Designs until he sold it in 1989 to John Johnston and Clint Davis. A few years later Signs & Designs changed hands to Steve Nootenboom, and eventually to father-and-son team Richard and Craig McNabb. Craig is the current owner.

Gene wanted his sign business to be the best, and soon Signs & Designs had that kind of reputation. And, it still does.
